Dr. Adam Cox
PSYCHOLOGIST & SENIOR POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW
My name is Dr. Adam Cox, and I’m a full-time Psychologist and Senior Postdoctoral Fellow at The Center for Progressive Psychotherapy.
On occasion, we all confront discontinuities in our psychological health, and can benefit from the sensitivity and discernment of a therapist in such moments. Every therapeutic encounter is unique, co-constructed between us, but at its core, our work is simple – we will use our relationship, and my warm, empathetic engagement therein, to help you understand yourself better. I don’t believe my role is to label you with a mental illness, but rather, to help you grapple with your humanity, with issues common to us all. We all experience fear and anxiety at times. We all form attachments and struggle with the pain of separation and loss. We all find ways of coping during childhood that worked for us back then, but which aren’t perhaps quite as functional in the here-and-now. Whatever issues are currently unsettling your emotional balance, I’m here to offer a steady presence, shining a light on these shared human challenges as we guide you out of choppy waters.
I offer a non-judgmental, collaborative space wherein I’ll partner with you to make sense of your current difficulties, explore your emotional reactions, and chart a pathway towards desired changes. I view therapy as an opportunity to identify and build upon your strengths, and facilitate better relating, both with yourself and others. I find that success is most likely where we operate as a team to figure things out together via a process of constructive dialogue. My therapeutic practice weaves together psychodynamic, humanistic-existential, cognitive-behavioral, and multicultural strands, but regardless of the path we chart together, rest assured that compassion, curiosity, and respect will always be at the heart of my approach.
I first trained as a mental health professional in my late 20s, earning dual Master’s degrees (M.A. & Ed.M.) in Psychological Counseling at Teachers College, Columbia University, between 2008 and 2010. I then further built upon these foundations, undertaking a Professional Doctorate in Counseling Psychology (DPsych) at City, University of London, between 2016 and 2020, with a particular focus on humanistic-existential and psychodynamic therapies. Most recently, I completed a Graduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioral Therapies at King’s College, London, between 2020 and 2021, further diversifying my therapeutic skills. A commitment to continuous learning ensures that I have the required flexibility to best attune to your needs.
“Adam’s approach touched me and personally helped me a lot. He has a very developed sense of listening and that’s the least I can say. Being accompanied by him allowed me to understand not only the origin of certain emotions but also to clarify the why of certain behaviors. It also allowed me to relate my past experiences to the present ones. This without judgment and on the contrary with a lot of compassion and empathy. He also gave me the tools to feel better every day and I’m thankful for that. A truly invigorating experience.”
“Adam is an amazing therapist! From the first session he was able to listen and understand. He has helped me a lot over the course of the treatment and is very committed to helping me. Would not hesitate to recommend Adam.”
